Category: Electro

When I went searching for the AOTW I noticed that there were some really good bands releasing albums this week like Metric, Hot Chip, The Hundred In The Hands(almost chose this one), Wintersleep, and POP ETc(used to be The Morning Benders) but when I looked off to the left and saw Niki And The Dove I new I had a winner. I have loved this band from the outset as they make the perfect electro pop that really satisfies my aural palate. Only setback of this album is that there is only 6 new songs as the other 6 were previously released but they are still great even after my 1000th listen and if you haven’t heard them then my friend you are in for a treat. Together they comprise one of the best albums of the year thus far IMO. So many great tracks to choose from so I am choosing one of the newer ones for you to listen to. Enjoy “DJ, Ease My Mind” below and do yourself a favor and immediately download or if you still frequent record stores, and you should, snatch it off the racks before they are sold out. DL here.

Kowalski “Take Care, Take Flight EP”

Hey Paddy, is that a Snicker's bar in the pool?

Hailing from Bangor, Ireland is the indie electro-pop outfit Kowalski who’s sound has been described as sun kissed, infectious, muscular, and dreamy. I do agree. I feel like I’m skipping across clouds being chased by neon orange monkey’s when I listen to them. Whoa! I need to stop writing these posts after I shroom out. Ok, I’m all betters now. Dive right in and stream the EP Take Care, Take Flight below and then you tell me how it makes you feel. Shroooming is optional. Get it here on their Bandcamp page.

I said it was optional...... but isn't it tempting?.....and pretty?

Joywave

Joywave is an electro pop group from out of Rochester, NY and are on the verge of releasing a new album called Koda Vista due out March 27th following on the heels of their 2011 release 77777 (Mixtape). I’ve been following these guys(not like that) for awhile now and keeping up on their progress and their sound is getting more polished with each release. Two new ones just dropped off the upcoming Koda Vista and they are beauts. ALLJOOK Interview

Let me introduce you to producer/artist ALLJOOK, real name Jo Osborne. Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa he moved to Bangor, Ireland when he was 14 and then to Brighton, England for a year to study music production and is back again in Bangor.  I had a chance to ask ALLJOOK a few questions about his music and influences.

MH5: How did you get interested in music?

ALLJOOK: I got into making music through the technical side of it. I love the recording and shaping of sound when mixing and producing. I played a bit of guitar so I just ended up making my own music. Im pretty laid back about everything but when I decide that I want to actually do something I usually go all out. Which for making music means learning and exploring lots of instruments.

MH5: Very cool. Who has or are your influences in your music?

ALLJOOK: I love rich synths and take a lot inspiration from bands like Phoenix, Angus and Julia Stone for their acoustic awesomeness, The XX for their open sound and bands like the Postal Service for how they blend acoustic and electronic sounds.

MH5:  I dig all those bands especially Angus Stone and all he has done. You have a unique name can you tell us what it means?

ALLJOOK: The name comes from.. well most people call me Jo and since my music so far is just me playing and producing everything its all me so.. All – JO – OK or ALLJOOK. Guitar, vocals and some percussion are the main instruments I record live and the rest I program in through my mac. All done in my attic studio.

MH5: It makes so much sense to me now. I was trying to guess but all I could think of was your music was ALL-JOOK(meaning danceable like a juke joint). Any touring planned?

ALLJOOK: I don’t have any touring planned. I struggle to organize my own day never mind organizing a tour. I would probably need some sort of manager for that. But it would be awesome to check out some different places. If I started making music with other people I would definitely appoint them to planning a tour.

MH5: I know what your saying about trying to organize your own day. My day never goes as planned. You will need a manager or someone to help out with that for sure. You have released an EP titled “Girls Can’t Catch Up” in 2010 and an album “Look With Your Hands” this past August. I’m always interested in how artists name themselves and their albums. How did you name your albums?

ALLJOOK: Both were named after the 4th track of each. The  EP “Girls can’t catch up” was named after that track as I felt it explained my style as an artist best or at least the direction that I was going in at that time, also .. it was a bit of a cheeky name and I liked that. ”Look with your hands” was the first song I wrote for my first full length album and the song was the foundation of all the other tracks. It was also a nice blend of electronic and acoustic which is what I like. I chose to pick what I felt were quite strong tracks as the album titles as I think a lot of new listeners usually listen to the first track of an album and then jump to the title track. So I think these tracks need to express you well as an artist so that  a listener  will enjoy the rest of your music if you can capture them early on. This is what I like about being an independent artist, it means I can make all decisions like this myself.

MH5: I like. So what do you do when your not recording music? Do you have a job besides? Are you trying to make music your career?

ALLJOOK: I work as a cinema projectionist and I have some pretty fun situations with it, stuff can go really wrong which makes it awesome fun. Its also handy enough cause when things are working you have loads of time between films to either work on my own stuff or just go an sit in and watch a film. I’m not planning on making a career in the music scene. It’s tough for artists here but I’ll always be making music in some way because I love writing and the production side of it.

MH5: Cinema projectionist always sounded like a fun job to me as I love movies almost as much as music. Almost. Alright mate, last question. What are some artists you are currently listening to right now?

ALLJOOK: Bombay Bicycle Club, Kowalski are whats most played on the iPod at the moment and right now I am listening to Angus Stones new song “Broken Brights”. I also love the acoustic style of Benjamin Francis Leftwich, everything flows really nicely. Also enjoying the Glitch Mob. Their full album is a good listen through if your into electro.  Some new artists that I like are Atlas Genius, Wilhelm Tell Me and also Eight Bit Tiger. They only have a couple of songs or ep’s out but they’re sounding good. Quite often I open up last.fm and just listen to unsigned artists or what is recommended to me through the music I listen to. Its great for that.

MH5: Nice picks. I love Bombay Bicycle Club and especially Angus Stone and all his work. Well I appreciate your time ALLJOOK and wish you the best as well as look forward to anything new from you. Thanks a ton!

Alright folks, there you have it. Check out tracks 2 and 5 off  ”Look With Your Hands” below and then buy it  here on his Bandcamp page and while your there download his EP for free. Stay in touch here on his Facebook page.

Labyrinth Ear “Humble Bones/Amber”

Labyrinth Ear is an electro pop duo from out of London. I’ve been a huge fan of these two for awhile now and am always in wait for something new from them. Wait no longer. Their new EP “Apparitions” will be released this Tuesday. “Humble Bones” and “Amber” are two of the four tracks that will be on it. “Goya” and “Amethyst Days” are the other two but we will have to wait a couple days to hear those. Check out both tracks below as well as an awesome remix of indie darlings Local Natives track “World News”. Labyrinth Ear does phenomenal remixes as well as make their own beautiful sounds. Buy the new EP here Tuesday the 7th on their Bandcamp page.

We Have Band “Ternion LP”

Ternion

London/Manchester trio representing here. The minute I heard this band I was like……WOW! Love, love, love their sound. They released “Ternion”,Latin for a group of three,  their second album last week and it is a beautiful leap forward from their  first album “WHB” which received critical acclaim. Seemingly the biggest change is the production courtesy of Foals producer Luke Smith that gives them a boost in sound that shines through on every track. Check out the video for “Where Are Your People?” the third track off the album. An electro beauty!

Now since you have been christened let’s take the next step in the relationship with the track “Watertight” a punky electro gem.
We Have Band “Watertight”
Time to take the relationship even higher with my fave from the album “Visionary”. A sexy blend of all things sugar and spice and boy does it sound nice!

This is an album to get into your iPod on the double like and one to play………well anywhere and anytime. Buy it here on iTunes and stay connected on their Facebook page.

School of Seven Bells “Lafaye/The Night”

SVIIB as they are affectionately known in Indie circles are a dream pop duo consisting of Benjamin Curtis from Secret Machines and originally Alejandra and Claudia Deheza(identical stunning twin sisters) and they are named for the mythical South American pickpocket training academy. Claudia left the group in 2010 for personal reasons and now Ben and Alejandra remain. They have two full length albums to their catalog(Alpinisms-2008 and Disconnect From Desire-2010). They will be releasing a 3rd next month titled “Ghoststory” and which the track “Lafaye” and “The Night” will come from. Both songs are beautiful ear candy and should be added to your immediate playlist/s. Their previous albums can be bought here on iTunes or here from Amazon whichever you prefer. Get your shoes shined, it’s time to stare at them.

Midi Matilda “Day Dreams”

San Francisco rocks! When I first heard this I was all like OMG! Who is this? Shazam don’t fail me now! It didn’t. I was happy as a fat kid at Baskin-Robbins. I’ll take my cone with 5 scoops of Midi Matilda please. Mmmmmmmm….so gooooood! Skyler Kilborn and Logan Grime´ comprise Midi Matilda and fall into the electro-pop genre which is one of my favorites. They just released their 2 track album in Nov. of 2011 and “Day Dreams” is paired with “Red Light District” and is available here at their bandcamp page. “Red Light District” is a bit mellower than “Day Dreams” but retains a poppy essence. Press play and get into their sound. It’s nice!

This post is dedicated to our friend Chase Straight from Electric Panda Music. He’s moving from New York this week to San Fran. I’m sure he will be checking these guys out once he gets settled in. Check out his blog at the link in our Friends of MH5 box below right.

Ennui “We Are Young”

This is as they say in the drug world “Addictive”. I literally played this 17 times in a row when I first heard it but now I’m down to 15 in a row(I’m in a support group). These guys are a Electro-Pop band from out of Pittsburgh and this track is from their Full length release “Formation of Tides” put out last April. This album is a Top 10′er from 2011 and needs to be in your library. C’mon, I know alot of you guys got iTunes gift cards and this band is a perfect reason to go and use it. Below is the album you will be looking for.

"Formation of Tides" by Ennui

Lightyear “Home”

Lauren Zettler of Lightyear

Lightyear “Home”

First off please do not mistake this Lightyear for the punk outfit of the same name. You will be majestically confused. This Lightyear is the brand new electro-pop baby of Lauren Zettler. They combine stark, popping electronics, warm, bouncing basslines and Zettler’s own airy vocals, to create a sound that’s both human and intangible—filled with space and feeling. It’s strong music that addresses vulnerability while revering strength, in the tradition of Emily Haines and Patty Griffin-From their Bandcamp page description. And no she is not the long lost triplet of Tegan and Sara either, even though she looks like she could be.

Or is she?

This video of Lightyear doing “It Beats” was shared with us via BreakThruRadio’s Hear & There series and now we present it to you. BreakThruRadio is awesome sauce by the way. Check it out!

Phantogram “Don’t Move”

Off the new EP ‘Nightlife’ released Nov. 1st. These guys are one of my favorites and this song is a great example why. If you are new to them they have a distinct sound that you know right away. Sarah Barthel is the kind of rock chick that emanates girl crushes abounds as well as the requisite normal guy drooling over her while fantasizing of bringing her home to mom. Joshua Carter is the kind of dude most dudes want to be. Cool, talented, in this band with Sarah, and gets to rock out with Sarah(sorry for the obvious point I’m trying to make…..Sarah’s so hot, my mom would love her!). Anyways this EP is golden and needs to be in your iTunes library or buy the CD and get it spinning in your Discman pronto!

P.S. Sarah is not the girl in this video. Google her and make her your wallpaper.
