On The Rise: Quiet Hounds

At times I will hear a band or song that just grabs my ear and immediately I give in to fully embrace what it is I am hearing. Quiet Hounds is such a band. I found them on their Bandcamp page and I liken the find to that of miner who has toiled for days searching for that one piece of gold that will make him rich and happy for the rest of his life and alas after all his hard work he stumbles upon it with great joy, satisfaction, and reward. Such was I when I first played Southern Charm and instantly realized the quality of this gold piece I had just found. MASSIVE! I then proceeded to play “Hemlock” and “Night Parade” and I almost cried at the beautiful pop melodies I was hearing. Did I just find my Holy Grail of Indie? My Wilson on an island of mainstream radio horribility(this word may be made up)? I believe the answer is a resounding YES!!!!! I have literally had these guys on rotation since that wondrous day and I implore you to listen in hopes you will do the same and realize the talent that lies within the Quiet Hounds. Fun fact for you: They perform in hound masks. Hounds of the Maskervilles perhapsical(I’m outta control, so sorry)? Stream the album below and check out the first single “I Get Up” off their upcoming second LP Megaphona to be released June 4th.

Time to let the dogs out.....and into your ears!

Lead single off their album Gossamer to be released July  23rd on Columbia. I fell for their sound after their 2009 release Manners and am excited for the album based on “Take A Walk” and it’s on the money signature Passion Pit sound. Get on board if you aren’t already. Passion Pit will be a feature band at Lollapalooza this year and they are on my must see/hear live list for the summer.

When I first heard the lead single “Strange Attractor” I knew this was an album I couldn’t wait to be released. During my toiling, anguished days waiting in anticipation I played “Strange Attractor” on an endless loop and that helped me stay grounded until the glorious day arrived of The Looking Away release. I bought it the day before just as the clock stroked midnight and I hit the purchase button and watched with eager joy the number of tracks being downloaded dwindle from 10 to 0. My moment hath arrived! Upon the first note being played I had a smile that would make the Joker envious and my neighbor’s worried. Lush, atmospheric pop with Richard Sauberlich’s buttery toned vocals laid over. Ahhh….yes!!! Please enjoy thouroughly the vidoe for “Strange Attractor” and then one of my other faves from the album “White Sparks” below and do yourself a favor and buy this amazing album here.

WTH?! Is it my birthday this week or what? Two of my favorite artists dropping new tunes in the same week. First Snowmine and now RAC who by the way collaborated with another fave in Penguin Prison to put out “Hollywood”. RAC is known for their amazing remixes(hence their name) but this here is an original track and it shines just as brightly as their stellar remixes. Penguin Prison’s(Chris Glover) vocals lie atop the perfectly crafted pop beat from RAC to create another party tune for your next playlist or night cruise. Get ready to dance! Then when you’re done and rested download it for free here.

New Snowmine track “Saucer Eyes”

We here at MH5 love us some Snowmine so when I heard they had just put out a new single I dropped everything and ran to the computer to listen. Thank god I wasn’t holding my 1 year old niece! After the first few chords I was smiling greatly as I knew immediately that they had not failed to disappoint. Vintage Snowmine sound with their airy guitar riffs and Grayson Sanders signature vocals that let you know right away that yes, this is another stellar Snowmine tune. If you haven’t heard these guys yet get in the know here. Check out “Saucer Eyes” below and then stay tuned here for updates on more from this amazing band.

This was me as I was listening to "Saucer Eyes"

Jakwob is James Edward Jacob from London and he is a master craftsman of electronic ear pleasing, bass driven ecstasy. The Prize is just that. You actually feel as if you have been gifted something special when you hear it and you have. The album has collaborations from Ghost, Youngman, Kano, Roses Gabor, and 14th which add cred and sustenance to an already dynamic album taking the echelons of it’s reach higher still. I’ve followed Jakwob for a long while now ever since I first heard his take on Ellie Goulding’s “Starry Eyed” and Mr. Fogg’s “Moving Parts” and believe me when I say he has upped his game since then. You can download the album for free here. Check out the remixes aforementioned then jump into The Prize with both feet by streaming the whole album below.

New Twin Shadow “Five Seconds”

Yeah George!! Easily one of my favorite artists my man George has done it again with another stellar offering in “Five Seconds” from his forthcoming album Confess due out in early July. This one has a beat that immediately grabs you and holds you tight as it takes you on a night cruise over an electronic wonderland. Ahhhhhh…..why is July so far away?!!!!! Can’t…..wait……must….have..more!!!!!

Enjoy!!

FJM is Joshua Tillman, former drummer for Fleet Foxes and Saxon Shore. He left FF to pursue his solo project which has materialized before you as FJM. Firmly rooted into the folk genre FJM shines brightest in folk/rock gems such as “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” and “Well, You Can Do It Without Me”. A brilliant debut from a man who knows his stuff, check out the cool video for “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” below featuring the captivating Aubrey Plaza from “Parks and Rec”. That girl crazy!!

Clock Opera Debut LP “Ways To Forget”

Ways To Forget

Have you ever just heard a a snippet from a band and thought immediately that you know you will love everything from them? Clock Opera is the most recent to decorate the imagery in my head with beautiful color and art strictly from the whispers of a few notes. Hailing from London this foursome has just released their debut LP titled Ways To Forget and let me tell you right off I can’t find one way to forget how good this album is. They craft sublimely beautiful pop melodies that will engage you to the point where you are singing at the top of your lungs like you are battling it out for the Karaoke championship of the world. The reason in my opinion for the title is that listening to it provides a way to forget all your troubles and worries whilst you are floating amidst your minds most beautiful landscapes. I mean maybe that’s just me but this album is a wonderful escape. Check out the amazing “Once And For All” for yourself and since it is not available yet in the states you can still buy it here from their website. A must own for any and everybody’s musical library.

At first I thought this was the name of the adult film industry’s version of Harry Potter and it should be. But thankfully it wasn’t. One of the great things about being a music miner is digging up priceless gems like The Magic Wands. I always check the new releases on Tuesday and low and behold my pick axe knocked loose their debut full-length Aloha Moon. Described as a cosmic dance through a universe where voices echo, keyboards shimmer and guitars splash like giant waves on a distant planet’s shores. Well, yeah. SPIN describes their first single “Space” as such: ‘Space’ is the first single from the band’s debut full-length, Aloha Moon, and it’s a sexy and propulsive stunner. Dexy and Chris Valentine build an atmospheric and cutting guitar soundscape that beautifully foreground’s the former’s compellingly stoic vocal. It’s just a really cool song, suggestive of the darker side of ’80s pop and brighter side of falling in love.” This is an album that will jiggle your heart and envelop your being. Buy buy buy here. Check out the cool vid for “Space” below.

Exit Music “From Silence” EP

First heard this band a few days ago and before the first song was over(“The Sea”) I was in love and wondering on how this group managed to slip by me undetected.  I immediately bought their EP From Silence at the show and played it repeatedly until my car’s battery died. Aleksa has a haunting yet captivating voice that enters your head and seizes your tympanic membrane in an albeit loving yet aggressive embrace. I love the lead track “The Sea” so much that I have literally played it 1000 times in 3 days.  Check out “The Sea” in all it’s glorious beauty below and then go buy it here. BTW Aleksa is also in actress and has been in The Sopranos and a few movies but most recently she stars as Michael Pitt’s wife in Boardwalk Empire. Yeah, she’s pretty damn talented.

Aleksa with husband Devon. So talented!!

This is such a cool track!! Performed by Michael Kiwanuka, Ben Howard, and The Staves at SxSW this past March.
